The Zulu are experts in the art of beading. Beads, traditionally, assumed a monetary role, dividing those with means from those without. Heavily beaded capes, arm bands, and jewelry were worn to display wealth and position. A complex lexicon of color and pattern played an important role in communication, being employed in "love" necklaces and head bands to indicate one's attention and intention to a beloved.
