The Zakpai Ge is the fire prevention mask. In the Savanna area where the northern Dan live, the danger of fire is
especially great. The fastest runner of the village is selected to report
fires to the people working in the fields and surrounding areas. He
also ensures that the women extinguish their cooking fires, before
the afternoon winds begin to blow. Zakpai is aggressive and carries
a branch as a weapon, sometimes throws things and is meant to instill fear. The spirit he represents can punish careless women by upturning their pots and can confiscate utensils for ransom.

Turn of the 20 th century. Slight wear on nose, and signs of scraping on the back where the sweat on wood would have been scraped off and added to the leather pouches to empower the piece even more. No stand.
