The isicholo is based on a married woman's hairstyle from past generations. Most Zulu women wear these hats only for special or ceremonial occasions. A basketry foundation is overlaid with string or grass fiber dyed with a mixture of red ochre and fat. The hats are symbolic of a woman's maturity & her marital status. This particular hat is very old and is made from human hair. Such hats are quite rare. It measures 19" in diameter and 2" deep.
