Distinctive bold, dark streaks against a light golden or tan background, the sculpture is likely carved from Zebrawood (also known as Zebrano) or a
"two-toned" variety of Ebony, similar to Macassar ebony.
This African hardwood has a high-contrast, striped grain that resembles a zebra's coat. It is a very dense, heavy wood.
This magnificent, realistic and proud bust was collected back in the 1960's by Max Kirkeburg who was doing research into oral histories in the area at that time.
