Functional artifacts were transformed into prestige objects that commemorated the power and status of the chief. Chokwe chiefs possessed many elaborately carved articles, including ceremonial weapons, staffs of office, tobacco pipes, and seats of office like this example.
Chokwe chairs are among the few African objects not carved from a single piece of wood, but are instead assembled in parts. The Chokwe people were fragmented into many countries when borders were established.
