Attributed to various Ethiopian tribal groups in the Omo River region, these shields are made of animal hide, occasionally from a hippopotamus. The designs on the shield are created by placing the hide over a wood mold. Shields, in addition to being used in warfare and ceremonies, also served as prestige objects. This one has a lovely subtle pattern engraved into it.
