Beadwork | Ndebele Mapoto (Liphoto) Skirts

The Mapoto traditionally was worn daily by a Ndebele woman in South Africa indicating her marital status. Fashioned of goatskin or canvas and embroidered with beads in unique patterns. The side panels symbolise the marriage partners and the tassels, the expectation of the children the woman will bear.

There are signs of wear and some missing beads and imperfections due to the age of the skirts.
