Most Lega objects are attached to the initiation rituals of the bwami society. The bwami was a closed men's organization with graded membership and complex initiation rites that imposed a high moral and philosophical code.
The initiate of the highest grade sees in all directions, and perceives what is unknown and invisible to ordinary mortals.
Figures like this featuring multiple heads are generally known as sakimatwematwe ( Mr. Many Heads").
