The Baule use a living field mouse kept in a vessel to disarrange a set of small sticks. The diviner then reads the
arrangement of sticks. Although the sticks cannot give detailed answers,
the Baule still consider it a reliable form of divination. They believe
the mice are in communication with the spirit of the earth & the
ancestors and hence are aware of the future. The masks represents the soothsayer meditating on the interpretation of the signs.
The lid does not fit well.
