Based on the style of carving, this is probably from the Mossi area of Burkina Faso.
The axe is of traditional design and form with a hand carved wooden shaft and hand forged metal axe head.
This intricately decorated piece was a major prestige object, and would be for ceremonial use.
The condition considering its age is good, but one of the back appendages is splintered, and as such, it is priced accordingly.
It was collected back in the 1960's by Max Kirkeburg who was doing research into oral histories at that time.
