This ceremonial puppet with separate articulated arms and legs is from the Zaramo people. The Nyamwezi, and Sukuma who live in a nearby area, have similar figures, usually with inset beaded eyes.

Puppets were used in competitive theatrical dances trying to attract a larger audience usually for entertainment, while also for displaying morals, legends and heritage. Also used during funeral rites. A nephew of the deceased will manipulate the statue to praise the person's life.

Comes with a 3 ½" cubed base to sit on + wedge to place under it to ensure stability.
