Hand-forged in the shape of an anchor, or some say a crossbow, this graceful iron currency piece from the Kwele people of Gabon was used to trade and store wealth. Prized as an object of great value, the currency was often hidden away and only brought out during the payment of bridal dowries or other major monetary transactions between families.
Otherwise non-functional, the stylized, thin, and non-sharp iron object represented significant wealth.
According to Roberto Ballarini in his book, "The Perfect Form", "its shape is considered to be one of the most elegant forms ever to have been made by an African smith's hands."
The flanged points are all complete; however the top portion has been impeccably repaired, and is priced as is.
