Once worn by a wealthy man of high status. Showing the mastery of the basket-weaving technique on this hat from the Nkutcu people. A combination of tying, knotting, and plaiting is used to create this tightly woven cap with its geometric designs.
Hats show status and add stature and are designed to make the head man stand out in a crowd.
The Teke people have a similar style hat.

Originally collected in the Congo in the late 1940's - early 1950's by Ronald Suetens who worked for Sabena Airlines which was the flagship airline of Belgium.
