This ceremonial puppet with separate articulated arms, conical head, simplified facial features with hollowed eyes, is from the Sukuma people. The Nyamwezi, who live in a nearby area, have similar figures, usually with inset beaded eyes.

Puppets were used in competitive theatrical dances trying to attract a larger audience usually for entertainment, while also for displaying morals, legends and heritage.
