Lipico Helmet Mask - Makonde People, S.E. Tanzania/Northern Mozambique - Sold

The helmets were worn by young boys during dances after they completed their circumcision and initiation rites. The masks represent ancestral spirits used to teach various lessons and morals. The young boys would wear the helmet over the upper half of the head.
