Weaving looms throughout West Africa use pulleys to smoothly raise and lower the heddles.
In the Ivory Coast, especially among the Dan, Guro, Baule & Senufo, the decorating of carved wooden pulleys has reached degrees of refinement and invention rarely excelled.
The carved wooden figures serve to guard over the work.
