The fetish represents the "Pumba" ; a protective statuette, with the the power ingredients, or fetish materials, "Matenda" attached within the wrapping around the body.
Today, the +- 300,000 Yaka people live along the Wamba River. The majority of the Yaka figures are associated with Mbwoolo shrines.
Their purpose is multi-functional, they can be protective as well as cause illness.
