This lovely and unusual fertility figure has a
beautiful rich patina from handling and wear. Its large circular disc
head with minimal facial features represents ideal beauty rather than
realism. The textured design on its head is indicative of braids and the
scarifications on the abdomen represents beauty and status. The Ashanti
are a matrilineal society.
It also serves another function, & that is for
young girls to acquaint themselves with the role of motherhood.
The back of the carving has patterns incised in the head
which is believed to ward off evil spirits.
