In lost wax casting, a model of the intended object is first carved out of wax then a clay mold is formed around the wax design. The clay and the wax inside is then heated enough so that the wax melts out or 'lost', hence the methods’s name - “lost wax casting”. To make the final product, hot metal is poured in, cooled and the clay broken away to reveal the bronze design. With this process, each casting is unique. West Africa is known for its lost wax bronze pieces.
