The geometric markings covering the figure, which is typical of Lulua carvings, represent body scarification. The term "Lulua" was given to the Bena Moyo, who lived on the banks of the Lulua River by the first explorers in 1881, hence Benalulua. Their statuary is remarkable in the degree of its ancient scarification design which was a manifestation of the wish to be socially differentiated.

The McConnell collection consists of many exceptional pieces, but we believe this figure was carved more recently, probably around 40 years ago, in the 1980's.
There are wood cracks, most notably on its right side.
