The Babessi of north western Cameroon
         only number about 29,000. 
The production
         of pottery has been a central activity since 
         precolonial times. Used as daily cookware, 
         ritual containers, and prestige items, Babessi 
         pots have been part of a network of 
         exchange for centuries. 
Babessi pots were 
         sought after for notables and titleholders.
