The Songye live north of the Katanga Luba and
north-west of the Kasai Luba. Fetishes of this kind
had a good influence on village fertility and were
used as protective figures against evil spirits and
hostile powers. Some guarded whole communities
while others stood watch as a personal or household
charm. Magical ingredients were often fixed in the horn
and stomach region.
This one has a duiker horn attached to the top of the head. It was clad in spotted cat fur, which we have removed.
