Horses were prestigious possessions in Djenne, associated with power and wealth and undoubtedly depicts a wealthy and important man brandishing a shield As one of the oldest cities in Sub-Saharan Africa, Djenne shared its fortunes with Timbuktu, as trade goods passing in and out of Timbuktu also passed through Djenne, as historically, horses did not flourish in Djenne and had to be imported at great expense from the Arab world.
This piece was crafted using the lost wax method.
