A birthing chair was designed & shaped to assist women during childbirth. The intent was to keep the mother upright & to provide balance & support.
The chairs were low to the ground to allow laboring women to brace their feet against the ground to help in pushing.
They supported the bottom of the women in labor & often had a slender, sloped back for comfort & to allow birthing assistants, who were positioned behind the mother in labor, to massage or support her.
Note: This was carved from two pieces of wood. The horizontal seat is attached separately.
