This was acquired through a collection that had several other African sculptures, but this one is a bit of a mystery to us, as we have never before really delved into African terracotta's.
Sources for these terracotta pieces are from the Nok and Ife cultures in Nigeria, the Bura civilization of the Niger River Valley region, and the Sao civilization of Central Africa.
These ancient cultures utilized terracotta for sculptures, funerary urns, and other functional objects.
This appears to be an effigy head, with the mouth and eyes modeled in relief.
