The Lipico mask is used in ceremonies marking a boy's initiation into adulthood.
The helmets were worn by young boys
during dances after they completed their
circumcision and initiation rites. The masks
represent ancestral spirits used to teach
various lessons and morals. The young
boys would wear the helmet over the upper
half of the head and would see through the
openings in the teeth.
