We collected this mask in Burkina Faso in the mid '90's, and have had it in our own personal collection ever since.
We later noticed that there was an inactive hornet's nest on the inside back. We thought it was so cool that we left it intact. It was likely formed in the sacred hut, where the mask would have been stored.
The Winiama have long been feared for their
magical powers. They believe that the masks
provide contact with the vital forces of nature
and are used in ceremonies to drive evil from
the community, ensure a good harvest, mourn
deaths as well as entertain. This mask is called
‘keduneh’. It is unusual, in that it sports 3 horns and embodies a
wild, uncontrollable bush spirit that frequently
falls into a trance.
