Worn by young men from the third grade of the Mmwo secret society during festivals marking the beginning of the dry season.These masks incarnated benevolent female spirits returning to earth to assure their families safe arrival and happiness in the spirit world. The complex coiffure signifies a young womans cultural attainments and social status.

This piece was collected in the 1960s in Nigeria by T. Peter Limber.
