Usually baskets from this region are flat, tray-like baskets which were used to separate chaff
from grain, and the deeper baskets like this one were used to
measure the grain. The color comes from dyes made
from roots and barks. The traditional abstract patterns
are representations of everyday things, such as shields,
huts, clouds, etc.The inter-laced lattice design at the base
of the basket which starts the weaving is surrounded by
a decorative stitch called "the dove's footprints."
