The Urhobo people settled North of the
Niger River Delta in Nigeria, and live from fishing and farming.
They
believe that the forest spirits called ‘Edjo’ influence their
everyday lives. Masks are worn by young men and used
during ceremonies related to the Edjo spirits.
The masks
and sculptures can be identified by their typical forehead
raised scarifications.
