These heavy wooden irons were used to beat
a garment smooth. Garments are first
washed, starched and folded into several
thicknesses. They are then placed on a
special flat stool where they are pounded
repeatedly and rhythmically to smooth
and flatten the fabric. When this process
is complete the garments are placed in
tin boxes for storage.
Ironic that we call these irons, since they were originally made from wood!
