VIGANGO (plural) KIKANGO (Singular) is the commemorative sculpture of the Mijikenda of Kenya. Vigango were seen to have aesthetic & practical value, to evoke respect, and to be linked in various ways to social & religious life. Kikango is a memorial post placed for the spirit of a deceased person (Koma) rather than a tombstone. The post is not erected at the grave nor at the time of their burial. It is often placed together with much less elaborate memorial sticks to one side of the homestead in a hut (Kigolo), which is used by men for every- day conversation. It is believed that the graves may have been marked previously by a tree or a large stone. 66" high x 6" wide. Base 12"x12" Provenance: Ex Mesa College Collection.
