Ibeji is the protective Orisha of twins. The name is derived from "Ibi" first born & "Eji" two. The Yoruba consider twins to be good luck. They believe they share the same soul. If one of the twins dies, the statues are made to become the abode of the departed. Through the intermediary of the Ibeji statue, the Yoruba mother of a deceased twin could maintain a bond with her child.
These are similar to their Omolangidi or play dolls.
