19" tall x 7" wide The Namji people are famous for their wooden dolls
carved with exaggerated features and adorned with
numerous multi-colored necklaces. These more modern
versions of the Namji doll make striking display objects,
either singly or in groups. Generally they represent a
female; however, sometimess they represent couples. The
namji dolls are among some of the finest dolls in Africa.
The young women used dolls to ensure fertility, prevent
morning sickness, & provide for easy childbirth. They
were carried on the person or kept within the home or
in a shrine.
