Colorful Raku Fired Clay Lion - South Africa

$38.00
Made in South Africa from clay, and raku fired with colorful glazes.
The bold, highly dramatic Raku process begins with a bisqued (1st fired) and glazed piece. This piece is heated in an 1830 degree kiln until the glazes have liquified. At this crucial point, the kiln door is opened and the piece removed. The rapid temperature drop causes a thermal shock which produces the trademark cracks in the glaze. The red hot piece is then tossed in a receptacle filled with smoldering newspapers and sawdust. With the lid on, the fire chokes. Oxygen is pulled from the oxide glazes, leaving a brilliant iridescent color. After the cooling, the piece is removed from the receptacle covered with soot, ashes and an oil residue. These are rinsed off in a final polishing.
As you can imagine, Raku pieceshave a high mortality rate in the firing process. The artist cannot fully control the crackling pattern, warp or exact color.
