The nomadic Tuareg of west Africa are considered master craftsmen, especially in the mediums of leather and metal. This large metal amulet is in the shape of a cross and is believed to have protective powers.

Sahara desert carry many items of jewelry for
protection and guidance. The most well known
of these are the Tuareg crosses. Made from parts
of silver and tin, these crosses are engraved for
protection, incorporating circle or phallus designs,
fertility symbols for both sexes and even some
with chameleon eyes or jackal tracks to symbolize
power. This particular larger cross amulet, was
believed to give its wearer protection.
