14" including standFemale masks of the Chokwe people in Angola & D.R. Congo are called Mwana Pwo (young maiden) and are one of the mask types used in the Mukanda, or initiation ceremonies for young men. Although always worn by men, the mask embodies an ideal of feminine beauty, serenity and grace. The tightly fitted knit costume worn with the masks include false breasts. Mwana Pwo represents the female ancestor, and in a performance, is meant to import fertility to the spectators. The gestures of the dancer set an example of grace- ful behavior for the women.
