Zulu Beer Pot - South Africa -SOLD
Price: $0.00

Zulu beer pots have become a valued decorating accessory for contemporary homes in the US, but their use is utilitarian in South Africa. This is a one of the best examples of the rimless pots made by the women throughout the KwaZulu-Natal region we have ever seen. The smooth black finish is achieved by refiring the already fired pots in a dry grass fire, then rubbing with animal fat. Pots of this kind are intended for serving and drinking sorgham-based beer. The drinking of this beer is associated not only with the living, but also with the dead, to whom it is offered when ritual dictates. This older pot is 10 inches high and 11.5 inches in diameter
