Keduneh Mask - Winiama People - Burkina Faso
Price: $2,400.00

The Winiama and Nuna, both sub-groups of the so called Gurunsi people, number about 25,000. They have long been feared for their magical powers. They believe that the masks provide contact with the vital forces of nature and are used in ceremonies to drive evil from the community, ensure a good harvest, mourn deaths as well as entertain. This mask is called keduneh. It sports a single horn and embodies a wild, uncontrollable bush spirit that frequently falls into a trance. His function is to drive out evil forces. Winiama masks are usually more stylized than those of other Gurunsi groups and they often resemble no recognizable animal. NOTE: Stand not included.
