White Monkey Mask - Dogon - Mali SOLD

Price: $0.00

The white monkey mask is called omono, composed of a face mask crowned by the head & bust of a monkey. The white monkey masker dances in the dance sequence to the fast dege rhythm. His dance is similar to that of the rabbit, & consists of hopping from leg to leg while crossing one leg diagonally in front of the other. The man who wears the mask leans on a stick & sits apart from the crowd in a melancholy attitude, but he is encouraged to dance by the singers who chant: "Monkey on a high tree, all eyes are on you, the drum is beating for you, move your head, move your legs, all the people have their eyes on you."

19.5"H x 6"W x 5"D

From the Charles H. Cutter, PhD Collection.
