These ornaments were worn by men and young women for special occasions and ceremonial dances. As a form of currency, they were an important part of the bride price in marriages. The shells were also used in the coastal villages to bail water out of the canoe. Twenty shells would purchase a canoe. One bailer shell is the equivilent of two pigs.
