The eight million Igbo live on either side of the Niger River. They are made up of a number of subgroups who occupy about two hundred villages. The Igbo grow yams, fish, and have a long tradition of commerce. The Ideal for an Igbo is to be a successful farmer who accumulates wealth, produces a large family, and takes his place among the ancestors. This is accomplished through moral determination and physical strength. The Igbo use literally thousands of masks, which incarnate a myriad of spirits. The masks are used in a number of ceremonies, including agrarian celebrations, funerals, and entertainment. They also play a key role in criminal prosecutions.
