Idangani Mask - Sala Mpasu - D.R Congo - SOLD
Price: $0.00

Masks and figures are made for initiation purposes, for ceremonies connected with men's associations, and for invoking spirits. They are danced in a progressive order to future initiates, symbolizing the three status levels of the society; hunters, warriors, and the chief. The entity of mask/costume has the name akish, but once worn it is called mukish. The bulging forehead projects frontward, the nose is wide and bulbous, and the eyes are deep set. The men's association focuses on the hunting and warring aspects of their lives. Made entirely of black braided fibers surmounted by a conical hairdo, it is decorated with polychrome triangles. The full beard indicates a male mask and is called mufyampo, the hunters mask.
