Gladman Zinyeka (1962 - 2000) was born in Gutu, near Masvingo (the "Great Zimbabwe Ruin" is there). After the family had moved to the country, Zinyeka had to selfteach the school education beside having to do the farm work. Zinyeka received his graduation in the confusions of the civil war in 1984. In 1985, on the futile search for work in Harare, he became acquainted with the sculptor Maxwell Mapanzure, who discovered and promoted Zinyeka's talent as a sculptor. Zinyeka shortly became a member of an artist collaboration and met further artists and gallerists who inspired him on his artistic way. His sculptures display a huge bandwidth of forms. He selected the human figure as the central motive and works with both realistic and cubistic style. Each of his objects shows high artistic originality and extraordinary artistic talent. Zinyeka received several acknowledgments for exhibitions in the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. In 1993 he received the first price of the annual Zimbabwean Heritage Exhibition which is highly reputed. Outside of Zimbabwe Zinyeka showed his sculptures with much success in Barcelona (1989), France (1989), Auckland (1989), Helsinki (1990), LosAngeles (1990) and Brussels (1991)
