The Ntwana are a tiny tribal gorup in the Mpumalanga provance of South Africa. This traditional fertility doll is constructed from plaited grass, wool, and beads. Pre-initiate girls pretend the dolls are the progeny of their current boyfriends, who are invited to participate in a dance competition, the outcome of which determines the future leaders. This piece is formerly of the African Heritage Trust Collection. 9.5"H x 4"W
