Phineas was born in 1972 in Nyanga and completed his education in Rusape. He worked as an industrialist until 1994, when, encouraged by his father, the sculptor Moses Mashaya, he turned his hand to carving stone, which he did with some success. Like his father and cousin Eddie Mashaya, he was deeply influenced by his grandmother's strong personality. Traditional belief is an important influence in his attitude to life. Phineas sculpts abstract figures characterized by simple, elegant shapes and streamlined forms. "Family Gathering" measures 39.5" high and 13" wide.
