Chituwa Jemali was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, in 1969. He completed primary education at Howson Trust School in Highlands. He then graduated with an A average at Wadzanai High School.

Jemali started his career as a sculptor while still in high school. At one time he shared a workshop with the late Moses Masaya. Much of the influence on his work came from the prominent sculptor Nicholas Mukomberanwa. Mukomberanwa also encouraged Jemali to consider taking sculpting seriously as a career.

Jemali's work has been displayed in many galleries in North America, as well as in Germany, Norway, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, Britain, Holland, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and Japan.

In 1993, Jemali held an exhibition in the Netherlands, where his work received acclaim from serious art collectors. Two years later he went to Canada, where he held another successful exhibition in Ottawa under the auspices of SOS Children's Villages of Canada. Subsequently, he held another exhibition in Holland.

Jemali bases his work on day-to-day events and concentrates mainly on facial expressions that reflect the innermost feelings of our hearts. Inherent in his work, and adding another dimension, is his interpretation of Shona spiritual culture, legends, and customs.

Leaf Spirit stands 38" high, 13" wide, and 9" deep. It is sculpted from serpentine.
