Bow Stand - Luba People - D.R. Congo
The great mythical culture hero of Luba kingship was a renowned hunter whose cherished possession was his bows. Although bow stands serve literally to hold bows and arrows, they are primarily symbols of chiefly authority. The gesture of hands to chest refers to the Luba belief that women guard the secrets of royalty.
