The Tabwa people live near Lake Tanganyika. They are ruled by chief sorcerers whose power is counter- balanced by male societies based on those of the Luba, who once dominated the Tabwa. Ancestor figures were used as prestige objects, which asserted the authority of the chief. The figures were placed in shrines dedicated to anestral powers.
