Mumuye Statue (#2) - Nigeria

Price: $695.00

The Mumuye live in northern Nigeria in a region bounded by the bend of the Benue River & the Cameroon border. Due to the difficulty of the access to their lands, the Mumuye remained in total isolation until they were found in 1959. Mumuye statuary was only discovered in 1968. Their statuary does not depict ancestors, but rather incarnates protective spirits. Yet statues reinforce the status & prestige of their owner who, as he holds them, has a dialog with them & thus ensures his personal protection. They are used in divination, healing & in trials when men in dispute swear on the statue. They also served as house guardians.

12.25"H x 3.5"W x 3.25"D (when displayed on the included stand, this piece reaches a height of 14.25")

NOTE: This piece may be purchased as a pair with Mumuye Statue #1 for $1,200.00
